Follow the links below to watch some videos that show how children are taught some of the complex calculation strategies in maths. These are explained by a skilled teacher that is working with us at Bovington from Dunbury Primary Academy.

Are you a parent who wants to help your child with their maths but you don’t know how?
Are you a pupil who is trying to do their maths homework, but can’t remember what to do?
Are you a teacher who wants to ensure that the methods that you are teaching in your class are
consistent throughout the whole school?
Then, these calculation videos were made for you…
Special Note For Parents
Many parents will not be familiar with many of the calculation methods we use nowadays, because the teaching of maths was different twenty years ago than it is today!
Being more familiar with a certain way of doing things yourself does not necessarily mean that it is the best way to teach it.
Today’s methods are designed to maximize the children’s understanding of number, and the written methods taught are not simply used to find the fastest way of doing a calculation on paper (although, that is the final aim); the methods are used first and foremostto improve children’s mental mathematical ability and understanding of number. With a solid understanding of the concepts achieved, children progress towards the most efficient methods.
It is really important that, in the early stages of learning, parents encourage their children to use the methods that they are being taught in school. Trying to show children alternative ways before they are ready for them can hinder progress rather than help. Please talk to your child's teacher if you want to discuss the methods they are being taught - we would be delighted to talk to you!
Thank you for supporting your child. If you have read this far, it is probably because you want to help your child in the best way possible by being consistent with the methods we teach in school.
